Where is Our Chapter Headed?
This past year as chapter President has been a challenging
and exciting one, with some exciting steps forward. We have a lot to
be proud of.
- Our chapter and our members have become known to STC as people who
can be relied upon to help make change a reality in our profession.
Our members are highly respected, our points of view sought out
in short, we are influencers in the direction our professional society
is going.
- Benefits to members have improved, with top class events that have
been well attended, a marked reduction in dues for Israeli members,
and certificates to members that they can present to their place of
work. (The certificates will be mailed out shortly.)
- A professional survey was conducted, and we will be posting the
results shortly on our website.
- Plans for the 2007 Convention on June 4 are moving ahead, and we
are going to have a convention that will provide top class speakers
from around the world.
However, our chapter still faces many challenges...

Lots of things have been happening behind the scenes, thanks to our
industrious volunteers, and there's lots more to look forward to in
2007.
We've started our own Google Groups e-mail discussion group. Nominations
for AC positions are now open. Leah Guren will be running in the STC
elections, and Chani Sacharen has had an article published in Intercom.
We have some exciting events planned for 2007, and our 2007 Convention
is scheduled for June 2007.

This past month has been one of learning, change, and accomplishment.
The Board Meeting in London was an amazing experience. My newsletter
will go out shortly, providing you with information about how our chapter
has benefited and will benefit by our becoming more involved in STC
at the international level. For now, it is enough to know that Israel
is a chapter that is highly regarded by the STC Board.
On 1 November we launched our professional survey. To date we have
over 150 respondents. The survey remains open through November 30. Be
sure to tell everyone you know about it. The more information we gain,
the more information we can make available to our members and the technical
communication community in general.
And of course, who can forget the 2007
Convention? We are pleased to let you know that the date is set
for 4 June 2007 at the Daniel Hotel, Herzliya. Our keynote speaker will
be Patrick
Hofmann, a leader in wordless documentation. He will be speaking
to us about the ROI of visual information design.
A longer newsletter
with details on these items and more has been sent out to all of our
contacts. In the meantime, do you have comments or suggestions? Please
let
us know.

At the last Administrative Council (AC) meeting, we discussed the need
for better dissemination of information to our members and colleagues.
To that end, we have decided to change my newsletter to members into
an e-News format that gives you the latest updates on our activities
and what is going on behind the scenes of the chapter, as well as keeping
you up-to-date with STC in general. This means that you will be receiving
a much longer, HTML-format email from us. We hope that you will enjoy
this new way of communicating our activities and news to you.
Do you have comments or suggestions? Please let
us know.

The last month was a difficult one for many of our members in the North.
Some of you had family members in the front lines, some of you were
in the line of fire. Others in the rest of the country were wondering
how your family and friends in the North were. Some of you volunteered
in some way; some of you grieved over losses. None of us was untouched
by the war, and many of us are still working through what has happened.
To the best of our knowledge, none of our members was injured. Yet
recently, it has come to our attention via a news feed that a technical
communication colleague in Jerusalem, Harvey Chaim Mayerson, lost his
son. I have no words for this kind of loss, only the silence of
shared sorrow. Even if you do not know Harvey and the Mayerson
family, I know that you will join us in grieving their loss.
As we enter into a new year, may we not lose the hope for peace. May
those who have experienced terrible loss find comfort, and may the future
be one of hope.

This month, after much thought, the administrative council has voted
to adopt a vision and mission for our society (see the upper left column
on this page). We believe that a top priority in serving in our members
is to look for ways to have a stronger impact for our profession in
Israel.
As I've met and talked with members and non-members, another issue
of importance is how to convince your boss to pay for membership. I
am working on some suggestions, specific to technical communicators
in Israel, that you can use, and will post them on our site.
As we began planning for the 2007 convention, we discovered that our
chapter will be celebrating its 40th birthday in 2007. We want to make
2007 special. Would you like to help? We need volunteers to help with
locating a venue, helping to set up the program, logistics, and more.
Zev Frutkof has been kind enough to offer his services as the volunteer
coordinator for the convention.
Why should you help? Because, one person DOES make a difference!
As we move into the summer holidays, I would like to wish you and yours
a wonderful summer.

Last month we were pleased to host Saul Carliner. We had a record-breaking
attendance of 61, the highest in several years (outside of the conventions).
The joint Yokneam Forum event with the US Consul in Haifa proved to
be an informative and fun evening.
This month we will be offering an event on writing for localization.
I hope many of you will find the time to attend. This is a topic we
often overlook until its needed, but by then it's too late--at least
this is how it happend with me. We are also looking forward to hearing
from those who are attending the STC Convention this month. Another
event on interactivity is also in the planning.
We would appreciate it if you would ask you company if they will host
an STC Event. We esepcially need venues in the North (Haifa area) and
South (Jerusalem area). All companies that sponsor an event will be
listed on our Sponsorship page as a venue sponsor.
I am pleased to announce that STC Israel is going to be providing professional
education certificates to all members who attend events. The certificates
will be for cumulative attendance at events held in 2006, and be accompanied
by a letter that you can provide to your place of work. They will be
issued in January/February of 2007.
This is just one reason
why you should be a member of STC Israel. Find out now how to join.
Speaking of 2007, we are in the pre-planning stages for the 2007 convention.
We will keep you posted as plans develop.
Remember, one person DOES make a difference!

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone, especially
our members, a peaceful and joyful Passover holiday. As we look towards
the coming year, many events are planned, including special a special
members only evening on AuthorIt, and a joint event with the Yokneam
Forums.
This month we are very excited to have Saul Carliner--internationally
known expert on e-learning, information design, and technical communication--present
on Recent Research in Information Design and Document Design--What We
Know and What's Left to Learn. In addition, only STC
Israel members qualify for a 10% discount on his two-day seminar
on knowledge management.
These are just a few
reasons why you should be a member of STC Israel. Find out now how
to join.
Remember, one person DOES make a difference!
